HKGAY.net

HKGAY.net Welcomes the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Proposal to Establish a “Same-Sex Partnership Registration System” (Hong Kong, July 2, 2025)
HKGAY.net welcomes the Hong Kong SAR Government’s decision to submit a proposal to the Legislative Council today, recommending the establishment of a “same-sex partnership registration system.” This marks an important step forward for sexual minority equality in Hong Kong, establishing an alternative framework to recognize same-sex partnerships. We note that the government’s proposal includes conditions requiring applicants to have already registered a same-sex marriage or civil union overseas. Nevertheless, this represents an acknowledgment of the community’s long-standing fight for equality.HKGAY.net acknowledges that while the proposed system does not fully achieve marriage equality and still leaves room for improvement — including removing the overseas registration requirement and expanding the associated benefits and rights — it is nonetheless a positive starting point. We also hope that all sectors of society will approach this policy with openness and inclusiveness, working together to foster a more diverse and welcoming atmosphere in Hong Kong.
