I must say this is NOT AT ALL a reason you broke him up. You could have directly expressed to him that his attempts to please you were a bit overwhelming and you should have been grateful that he tried so hard to give you company. But what you did was simply selfish, you didn't deserve him at first place. It's a shame. You're simply making an excuse here, the worst one.
