同性戀：一直在演化，從未被淘汰

 

（文/William Kremer）過去二十年間，關於同性戀的生物學起源的論文發表了數十篇，這個問題變成了正兒八經的科學問題。那麼，同性戀的出現符合達爾文演化理論嗎？

邁克摩爾和瑞恩的當紅歌曲《Same Love》成為美國支持同性婚姻陣營的非官方主題曲，這首歌引起許多同性戀人士在認識自己性向上的共鳴。

歌詞嘲弄那些“認為這是後天人為決定的，所以可以通過治療和宗教被治愈，重新塑造性傾向”的人。也有少數同性戀對歌詞持異見，他們堅持性傾向的決定是社會構建，他們有意識地選擇同性伴侶並以此為傲。

不過，科學觀點支持邁克摩爾。自上世紀90年代初以來，研究人員發現，同性戀者的母系親屬中也有較多同性戀，而遺傳被認為是這一現象原因之一。同樣相關的還有一些研究（雖然算不上實打實的“證據”）：成年直男和彎男的大腦存在差異，並且動物中也有五花八門的同性戀行為。大約400個物種有同性戀行為，其中與人最接近的物種是倭黑猩猩（雄性和雌性都有）。



儘管長期偏愛同性交配的情況很罕見，但有6%的雄性大角羊是“真·基羊”。

但是考慮到同性戀男女的孩子要比直男直女來得少，一個問題自然而然產生了：

“從演化觀點來看，這是個悖論。”加拿大萊斯布里奇大學的保羅·瓦希（Paul Vasey）說，“如果男同性戀這種性狀有遺傳成分，攜帶該性狀相關基因的個體不去生育的話，該性狀是怎麼在演化中流傳下來的呢？”

科學家還不知道這個演化難題的最終答案，但他們有好幾個理論。在不同的人身上，可能有不同的機制在起作用。大部分理論基於對男同性戀的研究。對女同性戀演化的了解相對空白──其演化機制與男同性戀有可能是相似的，也有可能是完全兩碼事。

編碼同性戀的基因也幹別的事兒

在某些情況下編碼同性戀傾向的等位基因（或一組基因），可能在另一些情況下給生物帶來很大的繁殖好處。這種機制可以補償同性戀缺少後代的狀態，並保證該性狀的延續，因為有非同性戀的攜帶者把相應基因傳下去。

至少有兩種方式會讓這種情況發生。一種可能是，該基因會給直男直女帶來某種心理特點使其對異性更具吸引力。“我們知道女性普遍喜歡自己的男人在行為特徵和麵部特徵上有些娘，因為這也許跟更會帶孩子、更有同情心等事情有關。”卡茨·拉曼（Qazi Rahman）這麼說。他和其他人合寫了一本名為《生來就彎：性傾向的生物心理學》的書。他們的理論認為，這類基因“劑量”低時會提高攜帶者獲取繁殖機會的成功率。偶爾有某位家庭成員獲得的劑量較大，結果影響到了他或她的性傾向，但該等位基因在總體上仍然有繁殖優勢。

能讓“同性戀等位基因”彌補繁殖缺陷的另一種方式是在異性中產生相反的效果。比方說，某等位基因讓表達者為男性所吸引，這對女性來說就具有明顯的繁殖優勢。而當它出現在男性的遺傳密碼中時，就會表現為吸引同性。但只要同性吸引的情況較少，該等位基因總的來說還是有演化上的淨收益。

現在有一些證據支持第二種理論。意大利帕多瓦大學的安德烈·坎培里歐-西亞尼（Andrea Camperio-Ciani）等人發現，男同性戀的母系女性親屬（比如男同性戀者的姨媽）比直男的母系女性親屬生育的孩子更多。這麼看來，由於未知的遺傳機制，位於男性X染色體上的基因編碼幫助同家族的女性擁有更多孩子，但會造成男性同性戀。該結果尚未在某些少數民族人群中得到重複，不過這並不是說坎培里歐-西亞尼在意大利人群中得到的研究結果就是錯的。同性戀是家裡的好幫手
有些研究人員認為，要理解人類同性戀的演化，我們需要看看同性戀人士是如何融入其他文化的。

保羅·瓦希為檢驗一種叫作親緣選擇的理論（又叫“家裡好幫手”假說），在薩摩亞島上做了一項研究。其觀點認為，同性戀人士靠促進兄弟姐妹的繁殖適度來，彌補自己沒孩子的缺陷，包括給兄弟姐妹的孩子提供金錢，做些叔叔做的事，比如照顧孩子、幫助孩子學習等。同性戀者與他們侄子侄女有一部分基因是一樣的，因此該理論認為，編碼性傾向的基因也就傳下去了。

懷疑這個理論的人則指出，平均算來一個人與他的侄子侄女類親屬共享四分之一的基因，那麼每彌補一個沒能出現的自己的孩子，就需要多兩個本來不用出生的侄子侄女。瓦希並沒有計算同性戀傾向讓同胞手足的繁殖率提高了多少，不過他證明薩摩亞島的“同性戀”確實比直男花更多的時間做叔叔做的事。

瓦希提到自己的這一發現時說“我比誰都驚訝”。他實驗室以前發現，日本男同志對侄子侄女的照顧並不比沒孩子的直男直女來得多。在英國、美國和加拿大得出的結果也是如此。

瓦希認為，他在薩摩亞島之所以會得到與其他地方不同的結果，是因為這個地方的男同性戀與其他地方不一樣。當地的男同性戀又稱fa'afafine，被歸為第三類性別，他們的穿著與女性一樣，他們還會與自認為是“直男”的男性有性行為。他們屬於跨性別群體，不喜歡被人稱為“同志”或“同性戀”。

瓦希猜測，fa'afafine對侄子侄女之所以更照顧，部分是因為他們在薩摩亞文化中得到了接納，這與同性戀者在西方和日本受到的待遇可不一樣（他說“如果親戚因為你是同性戀而拒絕接納你，你是不會去幫助他們的。”）但他也認為，fa'afafine的某些生活方式可能讓他們更有照顧侄子侄女的傾向。他猜測還會在世界上其他“第三類性別”人群中發現類似的結果。

如果真是這樣，家裡的好幫手理論也許可以部分解釋同性相吸的遺傳性狀為什麼沒有被自然選擇所淘汰。正因為這一假說，瓦希猜測，被視為男性又有雄性特徵的男同性戀者──換句話說，就是西方的大多數同性戀者──是那些跨性別男性的後裔。

同性戀者也可以有孩子的

美國的LGBT群體（女同性戀、男同性戀、雙性戀、跨性別者）中，約有37%的人有孩子，其中60%是自己的親生孩子。威廉姆斯性傾向研究所的數據顯示，有孩子的同性戀夫婦平均擁有2個孩子。

對於維持該群體特異的遺傳性狀而言，上述數字並不算高，不過演化生物學家傑里米·尤德爾（Jeremy Yoder）在博文中指出，現代史上很長時間內同性戀人士並不公開以同性戀身份生活。由於受社會壓力而結婚生子，他們的繁殖率要比當今社會的同性戀來得高。

同性戀人士有幾個孩子還取決於人們對“同性戀”的定義。在薩摩亞島，有不少所謂的“直男”會和fa'afafine有性行為，但他們還是會和女性結婚生子。

“一旦以多文化視角來看同性性行為，範疇就變得非常模糊了。”夏威夷大學的演化生物學家瓊·拉夫加登（Joan Roughgarden）說，“你要是去印度的話，就會發現如果有誰說自己是'同志'或'同性戀'，那麼這人立馬就被歸為'西方人'。但這並不等於那兒就沒有同性戀。”

類似地，在西方，有證據顯示很多人經歷過同性性行為。上世紀40年代，美國性學研究者阿爾弗雷德·金賽（Alfred Kinsey）發現，儘管只有4%的白人男性在成年後是絕對的同性戀， 有過三年時間的同性戀行為的比例達到10 %，37%曾在一生中有過同性性行為。

去年在英國的一項全國范圍性向調查，結果表明有大約16%的女性表示自己曾與其他女性有過性行為（8%有過生殖器接觸），7%男性表示自己曾與其他男性有過性行為（5%有過生殖器接觸）。

但大多數研究同性戀演化的科學家更感興趣的倒不在直彎的分法、同性性行為的頻率等，而在於持續的內在性慾模式。“性別認同和性行為不是測量性傾向的好指標，”瓦希說，“性感受才是。”

性傾向並不都寫在DNA裡

卡茨·拉曼說，編碼同性間吸引的等位基因只能部分地說明人類性傾向的多樣化。其餘的部分，自然涉及各種生物因素的作用。他認為大約有七分之一男同性戀的取向受到“老大哥效應”的影響。

這裡說的“老大哥”與寫《1984》的喬治·奧威爾沒關係，只不過用來描述一個現象：有哥哥的男孩成為同性戀的可能性顯著升高──每多一個哥哥，成為同性戀的可能性增加約三分之一。沒人知道為什麼會這樣，但有一個理論說，女性每次懷男嬰時，體內會對某些在男性大腦發育過程中起作用的蛋白質形成免疫反應。由於該免疫反應只在幾個哥哥出生後才起作用，而哥哥們大部分是異性戀、生下自己的孩子，因此這種產前怪事沒有遭到演化的淘汰。

出生前接觸到異常的激素也會影響性興趣。例如，女嬰在出生前受睾酮刺激的程度較高，則日後成為同性戀的比例也較高。食物和無名指的長度差可以用來指示胚胎期受睾酮刺激的水平，而有研究顯示，充當男性角色（T）的拉拉，其食指和無名指的長度差接近於男性，而拉拉中充當P的那位，兩指長度差就沒那麼明顯。當然，這並不意味著手指的長度差能用以判斷性傾向。

另一類兄弟，也就是同卵雙胞胎兄弟，問題比較複雜。研究發現，雙胞胎中有一個是同性戀的話，另一個也是同性戀的機率大約為20%。這個可能性雖然比隨機的要高，但考慮到他們有著完全相同的遺傳密碼，這個數字還是比預期要低。

加州大學聖芭芭拉分校的威廉·萊斯（William Rice）認為，要解釋這一現像或許可以從遺傳密碼的表達方式入手。萊斯等人說的就是表觀遺傳學，研究的是決定基因表達與否的表面標記物。修飾基因的表面標記物有時會遺傳。萊斯認為，某種表面標記物讓女性胎兒對睾酮沒那麼敏感。通常這些表面標記物不會遺傳，但偶爾發生遺傳就會導致兒子喜歡同性。

威廉·拜恩（William Byne）博士是《LGBT健康》期刊的主編，他相信性傾向很可能是天生的，但比某些科學家所認為的要復雜。他提到，同性戀的遺傳情況與離婚的情況很相像，不過“社會科學研究人員沒去找什麼'離婚基因'，而是關注於遺傳的性格特徵和脾氣特點，因為也許是這些方面影響了離婚的可能性。”

對卡茨·拉曼來說，過分簡化性傾向的遺傳理論的罪魁禍首正是媒體，媒體報導總喜歡說什麼發現了“同性戀基因”。他相信有數十甚至數百個等位基因與性傾向有關，或許在今後的幾十年內會被鑑定出來。此外，即使從演化角度來說異性戀比同性戀更有優勢，也不只有同性戀的性傾向是基因決定的——直男直女的性傾向同樣也是基因決定的呀，他說。
